Kathleen was born September 23, 1937 in Ossining, NY to Katherine (Maxwell) Moloney and Thomas Moloney. She had one sister, Florence. She attended St. Augustine’s Grammar School and graduated Mary Immaculate High School in Ossining in 1955.
Kathleen attended Fordham University for a year and worked at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in NYC and the American Telephone Co. in White Plains before coming up the hill from St. Augustine’s Parish to join the Maryknoll Sisters September 2, 1959. She pronounced First Vows June 24, 1962 at the Center and Final Vows June 24, 1971. From 1962 – 66, Kathleen studied and gave Congregational Service at the Center in the Development Department Communications Office and in the Treasury Dept. She earned a Bachelor of Arts-Community Service degree from Rogers College, Maryknoll, NY in 1969.
In 1969, Kathleen was assigned to New York Chinatown. Living in Chinatown, NYC, Sister Kathleen worked with Catholic Charities in the Bronx. In 1970, she was assigned to Japan. As she studied the Japanese language she learned that the Japanese also wished to learn English from Westerners, a big need in their studies and work. She began with English Conversation classes and then taught English at Sophia University in Tokyo. In two of Tokyo’s business buildings, she met with graduates for further instruction and this became an occasion for spiritual exchange as well as providing a better understanding of each other’s cultures.
On her return to the States in 1975, Sister Kathleen obtained a Certificate in Clinical Pastoral Education from Central Islip Psych Hospital, Central Islip, NY and studied at Fordham University in New York earning a Master’s degree as a Psychiatric Social Worker from Fordham University in NY in 1979.
She became a member of the Eastern U.S. Region in 1981 and has been a Social Worker in Catholic Charities Family and Children’s Services in Peekskill, NY, a Social Worker for Adoption and Children’s Services for Family Service of Westchester in White Plains, and worked with the mentally ill in Ossining. She has also served as Psychiatric Social Worker in Rockland Psychiatric Center in NY.
