Life is a series of lessons. Whether doing something new or going about our daily routine, God presents us with opportunities to see things in new ways to help us learn and grow. As a new school year begins, we Maryknoll Sisters continue our endeavor of “making God’s love visible” to those often forgotten on the margins of society by teaching skills needed to realize their potential and contribute to their communities. One key that opens countless doors to their potential is basic literacy.
In Brazil’s port city of João Pessoa, our Sister Isabel da Costa Araujo met a young girl named Bruna Beatris and when asked if she could read and write, Bruna said “not yet.” Sister Isabel offered to teach her and started class with Bruna, her siblings, other friends and some adults! Sister Isabel says: “I hope this simple act of help will lead the children to their bright future and the adults to better communication in society and their families.”
Like all Maryknoll Sisters, Sister Isabel’s willingness to say YES and provide life-changing literacy lessons to Bruna, her friends, and their families is a lasting gift that will improve their lives. She is grateful to friends like you, who make her mission possible so that she can impact the lives of so many people. “Even if they don’t go beyond their borders, our donors and supporters are the heart of God,” Sister Isabel says with a smile.
